The shakuhachi master, a laureate of many French and international awards
He studied the transverse flute in Mulhouse and Paris under Isabelle Froesch-Papirer, Daniel Morlier, Geneviève Amar, Vicense Prats and Michel Rousseau. As a laureate of many French and international awards, he now teaches at the Asnières and Le Kremlin-Bicêtre conservatories near Paris.
In addition to the transverse flute, he studied musicology at the Sorbonne in Paris, where under the direction of Marc Battier he obtained the title of DEA in Twentieth Century Music.
He began playing the shakuhachi flute in 2000. After seven years, the Grand Master of the Tozan School, Mr. Sōzan Kariya, awarded him the title of shihan (master). Subsequently, in 2007, he expanded his knowledge of Katsuya Yokoyama’s style with Veronique Piron.
Jean-François Suizan Lagrost is a regular guest at European shakuhachi festivals. He has performed alongside prominent players such as Teruo Furuya, Shōdō Sakai and Zempo Shimura. His long-term collaboration with Mieko Miyazaki has met with great success in France and abroad.
As a successful flutist, he regularly performs with the Paris Flute Ensemble, the Aurelis Quartet, the Tango Sud Ensemble and also with pianist Yun-Yang Lee. Since 2008, he has been invited to a series of concerts and masterclasses in Taiwan.
