Sanja Rankovic

Bio:
PhD Sanja Ranković (1969), graduated from the Faculty of Music Arts in Belgrade (1994), and defended her PhD thesis in 2013. She is professor for traditional singing at the Faculty of Music Arts in Belgrade as an assistant professor in the Department of Ethnomusicolog. Since 1994. Sanja Rankovic cooperate with the National Ensamle “KOLO“. In 1995, she started the Department of Traditional Serbian Singing and Playing at the Music school Mokranjac, where she runs the Department and works as a professor of traditional singing.
Sanja Ranković participated as a performer in recording of several audio editions. She has delivered numerous lectures, seminars, and workshops in the country, as well as abroad (Switzerland, Canada, Germany, France, Macedonia, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Austria, etc.). She has directed her scientific – research work to studying vocal practices in Serbia and throughout the Balkans. Besides performing and pedagogical activities, she has also published scientific papers and books.

Abstract:
The influence of modernization and urbanization on traditional singing in Serbia disappears in the rural areas in which it was created. This is the reason I participated in its institutionalization and revitalization during the 1990s. The goal of this paper is to present the teaching methods of traditional singing at the Department of Ethnomusicology at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade from 1998 (when this practice was introduced) to the present day. During many years of work, traditional singing has become an academic discipline with developed methods and principles of work. In addition to considering the way in which singing is learned, special attention will be paid to the “singing body”, that is, the students who approach different skills in this skill. During the learning process, they develop and strengthen their competencies and become performers or teachers of traditional singing. In addition, singing adds to the development of their personality, overcoming fears and socializing.
The institutionalization of teaching academic musicians the traditional skill of the art ensures the preservation and continuity of the rare techniques and styles of singing, as well as the cultivation of the intangible cultural heritage. After learning singing in college, students transfer their knowledge through formal and non-formal education and thus contribute to the preservation of traditional singing.
