Aaro Senzui Haavisto


Aaro Haavisto (Senzui) is chairman of the Finland Shakuhachi Society, Ueda-ryu shakuhachi teacher, Japanese interpreter and flute maker based in Finland

Raised in a musical household, he started music with 10 years of classical guitar learning, and majored in solistical lute at Sibelius Academy (Helsinki University of the Arts). He studied Japanese language and culture at the University of Helsinki, and worked for 5 years in Finland as a Japanese interpreter and teacher, as well as a lute and guitar teacher. After moving to Japan he worked as coordinator for international affairs and studied traverso flute making under Keigo Takesa. A chance encounter with a shakuhachi teacher introduced him to shakuhachi and he subsequently studied under Yasunori Tani – the Ueda-ryu Iemoto representative Dai-shihan.

After returning to Finland, he currently teaches Ueda-ryu shakuhachi in Finland and online, and builds and fixes various musical instruments. In 2020 he and five others founded the Finland Shakuhachi Society, which has since grown to 35 members.
