Japanese all-star ensemble

Shakuhachi 5 is a group of five shakuhachi players transcending affiliation with particular schools of performance who, in addition to their activities in the classical repertoire, are constantly striving after new forms of expression appropriate to the modern era. The group made its debut in 2020 with a video recording of the telework composition Longing From Afar in a performance conducted by the work’s composer Dai Fujikura. The group was featured on the cover of the Japanese traditional music magazine Hōgaku Journal also in 2020 in an edition of the magazine that featured an interview with the members of the group. Shakuhachi 5 are engaged in commissioning and premiering new works as they strive to pioneer the future of shakuhachi music.
