ISFP 2025 Symposium Abstract:
Music as a Medium
Music is generally perceived as an organized sound system intended for human perception. In mass culture, it occupies the position of entertainment, while art forms seek specific aesthetic (self)display and a higher meaning. However, the roots of music are connected with sacred spirituality, tradition and a form of expression. In music therapy, music is used as a means of connecting intrapsychic parts – that is, what happens in the area of mental processes, experiencing emotions and cognitive processes. This also includes the somatic dimension of music and the personal spirituality of the individual. The presentation views music therapy as a modern field, which is closely connected to the “anthropos” – a human being who undergoes development and who is part of the cultural system, that is, it perceives music more as a “human experience”. Music therapy is one of the creative arts therapies and is also closely connected with musicological subfields, as well as the medical field. Through the perspective of music therapy, we will look at the connections between music, spirituality, meditation and other related topics. Music therapy will be presented as an interdisciplinary field with rich possibilities for use. We will seek answers to the questions: Why can music heal? What and how can music heal? What is music therapy? What does it have in common with other musical fields? Why is music therapy not for everyone? And why does it make sense to deal with music as a medium?
